Happy Little Pill
your happy little pill
put a smile on your face
even when i couldn't
a happy little pill guaranteed to kill pain
came with a warning label on the back
but you were never one to indulge in fine print
you who once crafted beautiful things
castles in the sky with your lips
now left destruction in your wake
with lies seeping out between your teeth
you never let yourself heal
and your wounds began to fester
i smelled you rotting from the inside out
every time you tried to kiss me
your pulse has diminished beneath my fingertips
your eyes no longer shimmered the way did
the dimples on your cheeks have disappeared
and your countenance has become gaunt
your happy little pill has taken away
everything you are; everything you were
and your emotions have melded together
so i can no longer tell what you are feeling
or if you are alive at all
i came to your apartment one night
looking for the dignity i left on your floor
and i found you lying on your back, staring at the ceiling
with a handful of happy little pills and wide eyes—
lifeless.
