Awaken

Reborn: again awaken with a burst of
blinding heat. Rise, then, and claim the vanilla sky
that laps over the drunken capital.

A carnation blooms within a suckling dove, but
what of her mother? An earthly sickness turns
it from pink to ash in a moment. A cherubic
aubade that greets a soul arriving has
gone to greet another.

A love agape in its own rights has blossomed.
So wander, now, onto a vagary of sorts and
dérive through the life around you.
And, smile, sweet child. Sunrise will come again.

The author's comments:

This piece is about birth. It speaks of coming into this world and claiming it as your own. The speaker is insisting that the newcomer find him/herself. The child was born of a mother with postpartum deppression but the speaker does not want the child to dwell on that. The child should fall in love selflessly and go on a journey and always be positive about a new day coming.
