When We Were Free
We used to be free
Free to chose what we wanted to do
How fast we wanted to go, and in whatever direction we wanted to go
We made our own families, they did not chose us
We were free
Just free
Roaming free
Galloping across empty plains for miles
Surviving by ourselves and taking care of ourselves
Is what we used to do when we were free
Now monsters slam us into ten by twelve rectangular boxes
They jam metal into our mouthes and jab us with metal spikes
We are always contained and controlled by metal bars or ropes
No longer are we to roam free
We are on specialized diets with supplements to cure our so called behavioural problems
Our legs have never felt the stretch of a full out gallop
Our hearts have never felt the flying feeling of freedom
Here we are captured, used for human pleasure
Our hair is clipped off in the winter
Layers of blankets are shoved onto our backs
Cinched around our stomachs and pulling on our chests
We are treated like rag dolls, like we are not living creatures
The worst of these monsters claim to be trainers
They beat us
They chase us
They yank on our mouths and draw blood from our sides with their sharpened metal spikes
These so called trainers believe they are training us
Showing us the way we are supposed to be when the whole time we are trying to show them who we are
If they only took a look inside our almond shaped eyes, full of fire and passion, they would see
We are trained
We are trained to do what we were meant to be, horses
Trainers need to be trained
Trained to see what we see and know what we know
If they would step back
Take a minute to really see our nature and appreciate us for who we are
Who we used to be
When we were free
