Ellie's Dream
I think that if we actually took the time to know people
Before judging them
There’d be a lot less anger
A lot less sadness
A lot less war.
But that’s just what I think.
Because I know there was a time
where I would cry
because someone would call me a name based on the way I dressed.
A name that I knew wasn’t mine.
I’m not sure how it started
But it happens all the time.
People who are boys who sag their pants are illiterate.
People who are girls who show too much skin do it for a boy’s attention.
People who are girls who don’t dress like girls are lesbians.
People who are boys who don’t dress like boys are gay.
People who are girls who cover their hair hate America.
People who wear all black are cutters.
People with glasses are nerds.
You know, no matter how much I value pulling your pants above your knees,
And covering the three bs
I also believe
That people are people.
We all live
We all breathe
And no matter what we say we all care about what people think of us.
So let’s leave all of these superficial stereotypes in the dust
And actually care about each other enough
To judge upon the content of our character.
That’s just what I think.

At my school there was a girl named Ellie who wanted to bring to eveyone's attention how the dress code was only being enforced upon girls. Somewhere along the lines of her protest she was punished with two days of ALE (which is detention during school hours). This caused alot of debate among everyone in the school. At first I didn't know what to think, but in writing this poem I've started to have some sort of understanding of Ellie's point of view.
