Water

Each raindrop has been to far off places,
touching knights fighting for the hand of the princess,
dinosaurs fending for their young,
prisoners slaving in concentration camps,
farmers sweating from the east and west,
Men killing for an empire,
Women wandering the dark streets,
and even the Holy Son himself.

Rivers have heard everything,
Lewis and Clark pencil scrapings of sketching the west,
Screams from the bridge above,
croaks, cries and chirps from creatures no man will ever know,
Osiris's coffin splashing and sinking,
the release of steam from a crisp white boat,
the pleads of children trapped,
and the Commandments from above in the First Garden.

Oceans inhabit everything,
Thousands of sharp, glimmering hooks,
odd treasures and wood from the ships above,
missed torpedoes, bombs, and depth charges,
creatures, undiscovered that have never seen the light from the sun,
decaying bodies from fallen ships, planes and rafts,
trash and waste from every modern man,
and the footprints of the Israelites in the sand.

Now as you expand your umbrella in the rain
eat a home-cooked meal,
foam up a loofah in the tub,
do a cheers and drink,
brush your teeth with half-opened eyes,
or swim in the bright blue pool,
think of the water its role in our world.

I was standing out in the rain one time and then I realized that water has been everywhere.
