The World That Never Was
The dark lower world,
A confusion of buildings
And shadows
Who move and work
As they always do.
Never stopping,
Never relenting.
Up in their dark sky
A shadow of life,
Meaningful life –
Life that was never meant for them
The skyline littered
With buildings that
Grab for the sky,
Yet can’t reach far enough
To their dream
Of that dark sky
Seeing but never touching
The quest for meaning
The glittering castle
Reigning above all,
Floating in the dark sky,
Above the dark city –
That world that shouldn’t be.
The castle of nothingness,
Empty halls except
For those sat upon the throne,
Ruling their world that mustn’t be -
But always is.

This poem is inspired by racial and social prejudice. It uses the concept of an imaginary world in order to convey my thoughts on the realism of social and racial differences and the fairy tale that is equality in real life.
