My Colors
Bathe me in colors black and white
Like moon and sky in dead of night
Silent as the darkness from which we flee
Blind as the torchlight we use to see
Drown me in colors blue and grey
Lost at sea, push the world away
Dead is the captain once at the helm
We lost all hope the day he fell
Give me the colors yellow and red
I see the sunrise up ahead
Gift me the courage I now need
Determined bodies together bleed
Find me the colors violet and green
Like the wilted flowers on which we lean
Follow the rivers away from the sea
We need less blue so come follow me
Drag me to colors orange and brown
Like a dying sun we are falling down
I see no blue nor any grey
Oh how I have awaited this day
Take my colors away from me
My masterpiece is finished, that I see
The paint has dried, the picture framed
And with this work my end is fame
Next bathe my body in black and white…

I wrote this piece for extra credit in my English class. It is meant to chronicle the life of a person, using colors as metaphors for various points in this person's life, and the emotions associated with these times.
Fun fact: when writing this poem, it was written while listening to music. In fact, when first reciting the poem, I could not read it with out singing it to the rhythm of the song "Over the Hills and Far Away" by Nightwish.
