"When we make our own misery we sometimes cling to it even when we want so bad to change, because misery is something we know. The misery is comfortable." - Dean Koontz

A kiss of metal on her chest
Spinning, splitting, tearing
Her body a limp doll
Shaking
She waits
Sirens in the background
Red,
Flashing, flowing, draining
From her
She waits
Coldness suffocates her
Gasping, choking, struggling
Hands cover her
Tending to her wounds
She waits
Hurry, he shouts
Too many cars too many
Minutes
Passing, flying, ending
She cannot wait
No longer does she gasp
No longer does her Red drain
Minutes end
The Doctor waits
Preparing to play with
His pale, still doll
He waits

The author's comments:

Informal piece concerning the issue of ambulances unable to arrive to victims on time because of traffic, road work, congestion, etc. A "call to action" to change this specifically in the Texas Medical Center.
