Captain at Sea- An Homage to Billy Collins
You are the captain at sea,
the foundation of the home.
You are the watch dog at night
and the open, endless body of water.
It is possible that you are the North Star in the sky,
the glimmering shore in the darkness.
Or even the calming lavender aroma,
and the gentle embrace of a true friend.
However, you are not the raging storm at night
or the blazing sun in the summer sky.
You most certainly can not be the harsh wind.
Not the crashing waves on the rugged coastline.
In case you are unaware,
I am the lost ship,
the pacing feet on the creaky wooden floorboards.
I am the flightless dove in your gentle hands,
and the child about to take it's first steps.
But you are the compass in my grasp,
the anchor of the vessel.
I may be the lost ship,
yet you will always be the glimmering shore in the darkness
and -most certainly- the captain at sea.

This piece was inspired by Billy Collin's "Litany". I want this poem to remind readers of the importance of those in their lives.
