Many wake at dusk
to a brand new day
in which they enlist in a journey
that might take their life away

Leaving behind those they hold truly dear
to Mexico’s tourist attraction
an illegal adventure
from Mexico to the U.S
the home of the free and the brave

In search of a better life
and a place to call their own
throwing away their life savings
they earned
with blood sweat and tears

For a dream
that is not very clear
or even guaranteed
baring days as hot as blue blazes
and nights cold like the North Pole

In a desert unknown
as minutes, hours, days pass
walking, limping, crawling
through desert, hills, brambles and riverbeds
this large group of hopefuls and dreamers
become less and less

Some lay 6 feet under where they took their last step
while others make their way back home
not wanting to spend another minute
on a journey that may never reach its destination

In the end it all might as well be the same
because once they hear the wailing of
border patrol’s sirens
those dreams and hopes go away
yet those fortunate enough to
cruzar la frontera
are faced with reality

No nice jobs with good pay
or even a place where they can stay
nothing but fields to harvest
burgers to flip

But the dream does not end here
because a new generation is near
the birth of a mexican- american
a brand new hope and dream
one who can and will fulfill

Those dreams
that longed to become real
al fin the dream of un Mexicano
is not dead
but awaiting

I wrote this poem in the beginning of the year for my AP english class as an assigment. I was inspired by all the stories what i would see on the news channel. And just taught that this poem describes me and my people.
