Deep within the timber
A light had shown through
And the angst from inside me turned to wonder
Crisp leaves and twigs crackled beneath my boots as my pace quickened
The urge to break through the dark forest rushed me to the edge.
I was there faster than I had imagined.
The open field was glazed with sunshine rays
Time passed as I was frozen with amazement.
Then I realized I wanted to be high enough to touch the blazing sun.
I began to run.
My feet danced across the field of a thousand dandelions
But suddenly there was a dip,
I was splashing across a creek buried deep in a valley.
My breath was shortening and I wanted to quit.
Turn around and go back to where I came from,
But when I looked up a ray had peaked over the valley’s hill
And I was reminded of where I was headed.
I crawled to the top, all covered in muck and out of breath.
Not because I was tired,
Because the view in front of my eyes was immaculate.
A vibrant canvas of lush green and lively flowers
Just beneath the richest of mountains
Not a single photograph would justify the beauty developed on this Earth.
For a second I had forgotten my mission,
But a blanket of warmth grazed my face
And I was reminded of finding the source.
I started up the treacherous mountain
Trying to find every short cut and path to reach the top
Then I decided to discover my own way up,
As terrified as I was every time I heard a rock tumble to the bottom,
I knew that if I looked back I wouldn’t continue on.
More than half way to the top I slipped,
And I ricocheted down thirty feet just as the tiny pebbles had moments ago,
I was shaken up and scraped from head to toe.
Blood trickled from a gash in my knee but the frustration pushed me forward.
I moved more swiftly than I had been for the past hours.
As my fingers peeled over the rocky top,
I pulled my self up.
I had reached the highest point.
Drenched in sweat and gasping for air,
I couldn’t help but look upon where I had come from.
Miles of timber stretched across the land,
And I used to be in the thickest of it.
As I elongated my arms into the sky,
I could feel every inch being covered in the light that had brought me here.
How could I have ever wanted to be anywhere else?
This was my final destination.
My brighter side.
