A Chapter
You smile politely, lips stretched wide
Hiding unbraced teeth
I, bracing myself, speak
And you nod and laugh;
A laugh that sounds like a forwards roll
Forcing an effort, but gaining momentum,
Landing sprawled on your back
In soft shining blonde sand,
Your own hair camouflaged
As I reach out a clumsy hand
And pull you up to reach me,
As my eyes light like fireworks
And yours like matches.
You and I hid behind
The blue shuttered door,
Bare feet on warm dust
Trailing through the pages
Of our long-winded story.
Brushing hands, never held,
Unaware of the greatest plot twist:
That they never would be held,
And our story seemed to stop
Mid-sentence
