Operation Rolling Thunder
I awoke with a start, to the clash of thunder rolling
like a heavy bulldozer
through the calm sky.
The distant battle rages on with every flash of lightning
and every explosion of thunder, like a mortar hitting its target.
Its as if an aerial dogfight is proceeding outside of my room.
Planes struggle in an epic of extreme combat
my heart races as fast as the jets every time one is drawn near.
They scream by, aiming, targeting one another.
Faded to just a gentle beat of a drum, I lay back
in an attempt relax my pounding heart,
and slow the adrenaline coursing through my shaking body.
Then, a flash that illuminates my black room,
a stray jet streaks by as it is shot down, and a crack as it strikes
and downs the tree in my front yard.
The aural assault of the aerial battle
surges with renewed life
as I begin to fall into an unending well.
