The Things I Left Behind
One. Left. Right. Up. Down.
Three. Puzzles are hard. I cannot put pieces together.
Mommy is mad at me when I leave them on floor.
Six. I left Carter alone so I could play with Jayden
And the other boys. They laughed at me when I fell.
They are mean but I want to fit in. I miss Carter.
Eight. Daddy came home late yesterday. He left
A bottle in the kitchen. I took a sip, but I didn’t like it.
He told me I would one day. I don’t think I ever will.
Twelve. Dad packed his things. He said he’ll be back
Soon, but he hasn’t come back since. I miss him.
Fifteen. I left home, with nothing in hand,
And nothing in mind. They found me passed out
On the sidewalk curb and brought me home
Where my mouth stained the floor
With unheard words and spilled blood.
Seventeen. I left school because I couldn’t
Get out of bed anymore. I stopped praying too
Because He stopped listening to me.
Nineteen. Kayla’s due in five months.
Truth is this doesn’t feel like love.
Love fills you up, and while she’s full,
I’m empty inside. She’ll find someone else.
Someone better than me, I know it.
Twenty-one. There’s no point,
Don’t try to save me.
I just hope someone
Finds this since no one
Could hear my cries
For help. Listen,
Next time.

I've always loved poems that showed a character's progression through time. I love writing about bleak topics because I feel like there's always someone out there that can connect with it. I want people to know that they are never alone in the problems they face, and that there's someone out there that understands. I want people to know that there's hope.
