When you learn to love yourself
You, labyrinth girl, you, calligraphy:
You, who wear proudly your roadmap scars
will fear not that which is unshackled.
You will learn to call your own name and His in the same breath.
When your heavy-handed first love tries to shake the self out of you -
Which is to say that he has tried to make
a landmine out of the altar you’ve created for yourself – impossible.
You will swallow him. Your mouth, a bruised and battered resilient force
will say, “Not today. Not ever.”
You, daughter of the Most High vow
To never again render your soul uninhabitable
To learn to sweep away the unwelcome
To create a bed for your body,
which is to say that you will wake, every day,
at home.
