Through the halls of The Powers’ Residence,
my stomach echoes.
and the prowl for a treat worth its weight in gold has begun.
Beyond the pale white cupboard door
lies the coveted zebra cake.

No other decorative cake gets me as much as you do,
sweet zebra cake.
Your fudge stripes make me feel more patriotic
than the stripes on our very own American Flag.

As first bite ensues,
one comes to a quick, inescapable realization.
Little Debbie’s divine Danish draws drool imminently.
leaving a lasting impression.

Yellow cake and creme filling swirl through your mouth
in a beautiful ballet;
This is no mere childhood snack item.
This is the universe,
speaking to you through flour and sugar.
With every passing moment,
true euphoria draws closer and closer,
almost as if to become a reality.

However, consumption seems a two edged sword.
Cake by cake,
bite by succulent bite,
draws you nearer to the impending fear
of yearning for another package,
only to feel no plastic in your grasps.
Just a lightweight cardstock box,
as empty as the hand inside.

Running through my house in search of food ultimately left me at the foot of a zebra cake, and it just went from there.
