The Death of a Champion
I sit in my room, school day finished, boredom ensuing,
And I feel like all the joy has left this world,
But then, I spot my Gameboy Advance, hiding in my dresser drawer;
I quickly sprint over and hold it, like a parent cradling their child,
Marveling at its casing, peppered with scratches;
But alas a gun is nothing without its bullets,
That is until I find the small green cartridge, that I so treasure;
I press the power button and “Game Freak Presents:”, flashes onto the screen;
Your starting theme is a harp that plays the music of childhood,
And your title, “Pokemon Leaf Green”, brings me bliss like no other;
“Press Start” you tell me, and my adventure begins;
Flash to three hours later and I am showing no signs of intelligence;
My mother calls me for dinner, but she is ignored;
My brother begs I play Rock Band, but he is ignored;
My sister lays in her crib crying, yet she is ignored;
Battle after battle, badge after badge, I focus only on the game;
My mind is shielded from the world around me
As I finally defeat my rival, the Pokemon champion;
My journey is complete and tears of joy come to my eyes,
But through all of the excitement I had made one critical mistake;
The little green light on my precious Gameboy had turned a menacing red;
My eyes widen, my heart races, and panic begins;
I dash to the charger as fast as my legs can carry me,
“Stayin’ Alive” plays in my head, giving me hope;
I fumble with the charger only to look over in despair and see,
That the eternal flame has gone out;
My heart shatters;
My Gameboy was dead, and I hadn’t saved my game.

I always had a love for my Gameboy and Pokemon game as a child, and when my English teacher said we were writing poems about our childhood I knew it was the perfect idea.
