Words to the Sky (A Dedication to My Great-Grandmother)
It seems whenever I look to the skies—be it a starry night or vibrant gold rays—I think of you.
Always such a beautifully content soul, you were—like a blade of grass you kept dancing along, no matter which way the wind blew.
I remember watching you cavort and frolic about, to a tune only you could hear, proclaiming wondrous things to the world as if there weren’t a care within it.
No one really understands just how much I miss you.
I know you’re out there somewhere, but I also know you’re gone.
So I send my words to the sky, in hopes that they find you well,
Until the day I can tell you myself.
And for the times I needed a hand yours was there: reaching down, crystal clear, from the pure Golden Gates, as if God Himself had sent your succor in my time of distress.
Your warm caress, made soft by years of giving; mind, body, and soul alike;
Yet a firm hand, just the same, made strong by an eternity of suffering;
And yet still a guiding hand, nonetheless; a wave to wash us in the right direction and a lamp to light our pathways.
I’ve watched you slowly fade away from me a strong woman, not a single trace of fear in your eye;
Always remember how much I loved you then, now, and forever.
I can’t quite seem to find you in all that’s been going on.
So I send my love to the clouds, to have and to hold,
Until the day you come back to me.

I lost my Great Grandmother last year, and it was the most devistating loss I've ever suffered. I used to tell her everything and she was one of the only people I completely trusted with my whole heart. After finally excepting that she was gone--which took an aweful long time--I started to think about who I could tell my world to now. But I figured maybe I could still talk to her because she was still alive within myself. With these thoughts, came the inspiration for "Words to the Sky."
