I looked at the flag today
And realized it didn’t belong to me
What is a flag anyway?
Just a rag with some stars
A symbol to rally under
And this, my brother, this is a call to arms.

They say it stands for truth
They say every man shall be free
One nation under God they say
a nation of peace, justice, and liberty

But that’s not the God I know
My God doesn’t care how you dress
Or what business suit you salute
My God isn’t an eagle on a stick
And my God is not an anthem
My God has got no prejudices
My God is not bipartisan
Most of all, my God does not love war
He makes no profit from pain
So one of us has to be wrong
And something needs to change

What is a flag anyway?
I looked at it like I was seeing it
for the first time
And I couldn’t help but have the epiphany
That I have been lied to all my life
I stood there on the street
I witnessed my sudden disenchantment
From my native country.

And only now is my mind
beginning to break through
These chains binding me
These chains of red, white, and blue.

It looked so strange to me
Like a foreign country up there
Flapping in the breeze
And I thought to myself
What is a flag anyway?
I need to know
Someone tell me please.

A flag is just a rag with some stripes
A flag is just a symbol
It means what you want it to mean
This flag belongs to America
It doesn’t belong to me.
