Invisible
My world moves in slow motion
as I walk with a timid gait.
Every day, I examine these unaware souls who wear
carefree smiles and lukewarm hearts.
They stride with confidence.
Time stills as I gaze with a face of blank emotion
at each passing figure.
But you catch my eye.
I walk with you awhile,
admiring your elegant aura.
Your hair falls in golden locks around
your pretty rosy cheeked face.
You're popular around here:
the star athlete of three varsity sports, president of our class, and valedictorian.
You stop in front of your clique.
Their dull conversation blooms as they eagerly greet you.
I linger in front of one of your friends.
Does she see me?
I'm standing here before her.
A mess of frizzy brown hair and black oval framed glasses.
I challenge her to blink twice if she does.
She stares blankly at me and blinks
once.
On to the next friend.
Will he hear me?
I murmur a hello.
I may be quiet, but I can be heard with the songbird voice I have.
I urge him to say something back.
He opens his mouth and
coughs.
One more try.
I hesitantly stand near this last friend.
Does she feel me?
I raise my hand, palm out, slightly above my shoulder.
My fingertips are tough from the up and down movement of
black and white keys.
I urge her to make a move.
She mirrors my motions, reaches out and
swats the air, pushing away dust particles.
I'm unseen, unheard, unfelt -- unlike you.
I glance at you one more time with admiration and jealousy,
then walk away defeated.
I guess mom and dad were right.
I'm just a shadow in your sunlight.
