Once I Was
Once I was an idea, an infinite potential being,
a faint glimmer of a thing.
Once I was an infant, a cherished golden child,
suckling, screaming and wild.
Once I was an adolescent, a rebellious troubled teen
who knew the world as mean.
Once I was an adult, a bitter greying elder
waiting for my bones to weather.
Now I am a nothing, a hollow wisp of air,
trying, but failing, to care.
