Summer Music
One man transposes
His soul's whispers and shouts:
the rolling steams of heat and the reprieves of cool shadows,
the vibrancy of trees spreading life into their leaves and the laziness of naps underneath them.
Sparks of inspiration lit then dampened,
to be replaced by another inspiration yet built up then again dampened
like the frolicking of waves at Dover Beach where time passes yet always returns.
This man, Samuel Barber, is a very sophisticated man.
Into a full compositional piece yet distinctive in parts,
Fast tempi and complex rhythmic schemes,
showcasing the mastery yet simplicity of each instrument.
The oboe staged to its eloquence
The flute cheered to vivacity
and the clarinet freed to skip gracefully,
Even as the French horn loudly resonates
And the bassoon anchors
support and strength for the others.
But what makes this adventure so adventuresome?
Is it the contrast to slow and fast tempi?
Or maybe the challenge of 10 notes in one beat
Oh, definitely the different rhymes being played at the same time.
But how to achieve success on this adventure
Clearly the focus is to weave the myriad into one
Yet have each be its own.
Each individual feeding yet gaining from the musicality of the others
An ecosystem of life in summer Samuel Barber casts,
One discovered on Dover Beach where time passes yet always returns.
