Beach
Your eyes are squinted,
as you gaze at the blue that never ends,
big and bright like your childhood dreams.
The sun kisses your skin as the breeze plays with your hair.
Your feet are absorbed by miles of spongy earth,
as your lungs are filled with the ocean’s sweet breath.
Umbrellas pop up out of the ground like carrots,
people huddled for the little shade they provide.
Others lounging on towels, praying for a cloud.
Tourists Oohing and Ahhing at our beautiful reality,
wishing that this was life.
To those of us lucky enough to call this just another day,
laugh at the strangers who forgot their sunblock
and the folks that turn into lobsters after one day.
Seagulls begin to squeak and squeal for a midday snack.
The natives know better but tourists are blind
to the addiction they’re supplying with just a few bread crumbs.
Lifeguards rave and rant
“Get off the rocks!”
but no one listens.
As you walk away,
the commotion gets softer.
The hot asphalt greats you with burning passion.
You turn to see the glittery bliss you left behind,
your exhaustion combines with sadness
and you know the day is over.
