"Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of, who do the things no one can imagine" -Alan Turing

They cast from the sunlight, people say.
But I believe they hold our secrets,
our fears.
They are stitched to us beneath feet and follow us
like mimicking slaves
Their darkness clings to us only during
the day
sunset breaking its restraints,
smothering them with the night.
They blend in completely.
Disappearing.
Yet, absorbed in my pitch-black surroundings.
That is why we are afraid of the dark;
That is where they live,
like monsters underneath our beds.

The mind loves trickery.
Make you fear what you can’t see,
turning the simplest noises into death threats,
like it’s all just a dream.
Only never to be pinched back to reality
Because it never feels real.
When dawn stains the sky they are
forced beneath us once again.
Only to be a reflectant of our darkest
selves.

The author's comments:

I believe our darkest selves hide in our shadows during the day. They do not have eyes because they do not show emotion, they do not have a soul or a heart. Our shadows leave us in the night, only to become stronger, and try to taint our minds, posses our bodies. Some are unlucky and cannot overcome the darkness, and consumed, hence the evil things people do in this world.

This is why we slept with a nightlight when we were young, and squeezed onto our teddybears through the night, because we knew we were alone.

Then again, we weren't.
