The One That Got Away
Our stories flow
while she is getting to know fish.
Don’t you fall now.
Get up.
Choose the branch less swung upon.
Wade in the direction you don’t want
for she is here.
She stands in the moonlight
watching.
Always watching.
By daybreak she is still.
Her branches overlooking
the one that got away.
I walk to her.
She doesn’t move.
A leaf falls to the ground
and she winces.
She is angry.
Her branches sway
as the little brown squirrel
hurries down.
Our stories flow
and night falls once more.
