Seeing
how will you return
you forgot you see
the
shade of the strands
breadth of the hide
vigor of the lips and print of the teeth
that a soul has windows those windows once had glint
skeletal telescopes once sought a caress, a clasp
the fingers of the hand have lost their direction
limply they sit and
even an abusive flutter they can now hardly muster
so
how will you remember
you are bound you see
by a nameless captor who has named the villain You
society has stitched straitjackets a many, you see
and you, you have
adorned yourself in it,
never to be free

I would say that the inspiration for this poem absolutely came from the annoyance I felt after realizing that my futile attempts at popularity - which is an incredibly fickle thing - had only accomplished dulling of all the aspects about myself that made me, well, me (as cliche as that may sound).
