Sweet Bruises

Look not upon the bruised skin to judge the sweetness of the fruit
For it is well known
That beneath the darkened bruise of the banana
Once a mellow yellow in tone
Now beaten to a black bruise
Lies the most tender, and sweetest of flesh
And of that sweetness, you'll never know
If you look upon it in disgust
And refuse to look further than the skin
The darkened skin
Within your mind, darkens the fruit beneath
When nothing could be further from the truth
And if you darken the fruit
By the darkness of its wounds
Then do you even deserve a glimpse of that sweetness
Well, I shall let the fruit decide
Though its fear shall probably answer for me
Fear that by the darkness of its wounds
It's sweet fruit shall also be judged in edible
Now a thick skin
Now a thick skin,
But wounded nonetheless
But let your eyes
Be as mellow as the yellow
And accept
That of the fruit beneath, you know so little
With gentle eyes
Judge it not
With gentle hands
Peel back the skin
Let the darkness no longer provoke your repulsion
Instead a hearty appetite
That henceforth, you first taste the fruit
Before you dare disparage
It's heart and flesh
