Neighborhoods Like Mine

People wonder why
The people in neighborhoods like mine
Don’t like the police.

 

We’ve been hurt too many times,
Disrespected and humiliated
By those whose job it is to “protect and serve.”

 

Unfairly, overwhelmingly profiled
Hoodies are no longer just jackets,
But a sign of guilt.

 

Hearts turn to steel
Badges form armor around
The deep rooted desires of the system.

 

How many must we see die?
Thousands of lives decimated
To appease the damaged soul of authority.

 

Emmett Till, July of 1941 for whistling;
Trayvon Martin, February of 2012 for wearing a hoodie;
Mike Brown, August of 2014 for…
