A soft tear
slippery and cold
moves from side to side
but stays within a circle

falls
even

farther

starts at the top,
within a cotton pillow
peers down
at things that happen below
it watches and waits
until it’s time to fall

falls
even
farther

films over surfaces
forms little bubbles
that follow in its place
creates cloudy visions
of the world outside

falls
even

farther

runs a race
to the bottom
of the land
when there’s no longer
any drop left to move
another foot, inch, sliver

falls
even
farther

crashes into the
surface below
loud and bold
splinters into
thousands of tiny pieces
breaks the perimeter
that enclosed it

it is free
