I Wait

I wait outside the coffee shop,
The one you adore because
The view of the canals enchant you,
You said once. I remember how
You smiled and spoke so effortlessly
To me, as if we were the same person and
To me, I suppose we were.
Remembering those fond times,
Remembering how we seemed inseparable,
And remembering how
And why you left.
I can't remember why,
I want to, but I can't.
We were here when you told me,
We were smiling and looking out into the city,
And there was something off about you
And your smile.
The city wasn't as bright, for
The smile that once lit it up was dim.
Moving trucks came in
Moving you and every perfect part of you out of my life.
The lights of the city couldn't light up my world for
The very light that illuminated the city was gone.
Years became days, days became years, and
Years so distant sprinted towards me, but the days
That were so close never came.
That was my biggest regret,
Not asking why.

I remember back to that same day
And when my eyes are closed,
And my mind quieted,
I understand why.
I remember that it was
For the best, both
For you and for me.
And I realize I am happier
And more excited for life
Without you and you
Without me.

I love you for that.
