Acceptance & Belonging
At church,
I am asked why I go to “crazy” parties,
And allow myself to enjoy such a worldly thing.
At school,
I am asked why I choose not drink,
When I could be having so much more fun.
At church,
I am asked why I swear on occasions,
How I could let such vile things come out of my mouth?
At school,
I am asked why I try to use softer words,
When I can’t express myself as strongly with them.
At church,
I am frowned upon for missing church,
“Every Sunday counts” they tell me.
At school,
People are amazed that I go nearly every Sunday,
And don’t understand how I can last for three hours.
At church,
While wearing a short skirt,
I notice looks of disapproval in my direction.
At school,
While making sure to cover up,
I am told not to be afraid to show some skin.
At church,
I am judged,
Because I am not as righteous as I should be.
At school,
I am judged,
Because I need to learn to live more.
To which world do I belong?
