Frail

How easily does bone crunch
under the pressure of a rock,
or flesh bleed
due to a misstep and a hidden shard of glass.

How easily does an organ rupture,
being naught but a frail sac
cushioned only by quivering fat
and skin.

How easily does that spongy thing
we call a brain
cave in on itself
and the intricate web of synapses
dissolve
into a flat mess.

How easily do a book’s worn pages
become drenched in water,

And how easily do the ink runes
fall away
into meaningless smudges.

How easily does a friendship rend,
caught on a shard of glass,
caught on a misunderstanding;
how easily do years of brotherhood
go to waste
on the edge
of a sword.

How easily does a voice go unheard,
a small cry
of pain

Silenced, blotted out,
by a world that cannot help but maintain a constant stream of
noise.

How easily is a memory forgotten,
snatched up and eaten by vicious time.

how easily does a smile
disappear.

This poem is breathtakingly beautiful. Your images and metaphors are spot on, the final line heart-stopping, and the title perfect.
