To Know What I've Never Known
To know what I’ve never known
To feel the warm embrace of a ghost
To be a blanket of comfort to the fragile body of a nonexistent
To live a life full of sweet, blossoming daisies
Without the seeds ever taking root
Being thrust into a world with boundless bounds
Being placed delicately into the hands of a thorn
  Being chosen to choose
A life that has already been determined
To know a way of life that you have never lived
To see it through the windows of your home
To play dolls with the giggling girl across the street,
To play ball with the boy down the road.
To tuck them in and tell them goodnight,
  Little sister,
  Little brother,
Sweet, innocent being that is not my own in blood.
Watching him give out a warm embrace
Watching her be a blanket of comfort
Watching them live their lives with as much richness as a flower in full bloom
  Watching the world know
  What I’ve never known

This piece was inspired by a prompt, asking to write about something that is missing in your life. For me, this is a younger sibling.
