Beginning of the End
A tear or two collected in the corners of her eyes,
She sat up straight and folded her hands in her lap;
Glanced over at me for reassurance-
To make sure I was still young;
That I hadn't grown up in that moment.
She crossed her legs at her seat,
Trying to hold herself together.
She shifted her sight up to the sky,
Pondering how time could possibly pass so fast.
She felt a tear trickle down to the tip of her toungue,
Her stomach spun.
She felt like she was trampled with reality,
She could feel herself age a ton.
My mom put her arm around me,
And whispered, "Don't grow up, please!"
The groom winked in our direction,
Sensing the adults' tension.
After all, he was the first of the new generation,
My cousin was the first to be wed.
All of us wept for our dear friend;
But we all knew,
This was the beginning of the end.
