The Pieces I Collect

I am my Mother’s determination,
and my Father’s analytical mind.
I am my Grandmother’s gentle strength,
with my grade-school Mentor’s ability to be kind.
I am my old Friend’s thoughtfulness,
with a mean streak from seventh grade.
I have not yet learned of love,
but neither have I learned to hate.
I am my Aunt’s ambition,
with my Ama’s zest for life.
I have my Acung’s strict prudence,
but my Grandpa’s ornery side.
I myself am nothing,
but for the pieces I collect.
I’ll spend forever adding to myself
the people I can’t stand to forget.
