the real us
We’re teenage girls
We don’t wake up perfect
Our hair doesn’t straighten itself
Our make up doesn’t appear on our face
We’re not a Barbie doll
We spend hours making ourselves something we’re not
And that’s what you see
The perfect girl
The girl that never cry’s
The girl that never speaks up
The girl that isn’t us
You don’t see the real girl
You don’t see the make up running down our face
You don’t see the hair sliding into a bun
You don’t see the true us
Because the true us is something we’re taught to hide
Never to show our feelings
Never to let anyone see
We’re taught to be perfect like some Barbie doll
that has no flaws
But that’s not us.
