I wondered if I was ever going to see that random stranger again
The one who merrily looked into my eyes with a kind smile
The kind of smile that reassured me immensely
And took me back to my carefree past which is now a stain

A beautifully variegated stain with breath-taking moments;
Childish pranks; joyous laughter; pointless arguments;
Cuddling up near the fire; tumbling around the blankets.
Each day filled with new excitement of components

I ran across the street, behind me followed my sister,
Behind her was my brother, and my other cousins.
Everyone screaming with an abundance of excitement within them,
And then came our aunt to question, “Where do you think you’re going mister?”

Everyone froze as they heard the screechy voice that yelled in frustration,
The shadow of her body was twice the size of Mount Rushmore,
And we always had the special bond between us cousins,
Making fun of her whenever we can, it was just quite a sensation.

She came to scream about the cookies she freshly baked,
Ready to take them out of the oven.
The strong mouthwatering aroma caught our senses.
And we stole them, ran for our lives and escaped.

But the crumbs along the house made a trail out to the street
Attracting and alerting everyone’s sense organs.
But we managed to stuff them, as much as our tiny mouths could hold
And ran, ran, ran away as fast as we could, with our miniature feet.

We were standing, with our little heads lowered down,
Staring at the ground, making patterns in our jumpy minds.
Trying not to pay attention to our aunt’s words, instead
We were all mapping a way to make her smile than frown.

And then I suddenly felt a tap that brought me back to the reality
Oh, how I wish I could get those priceless memories back!
The really sweet and tangy moments that made my childhood worth it
Make the most out of this, as this is not normality

In my poem ‘Precious lives, love, and smiles’, I talk about the wonderful and carefree days of childhood that has been spent with your siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents etc. I chose this particular situation because most of my relatives live in India and when I was a toddler, back in India I had all my cousins and relatives to play and spend time with. Later as we migrated to the United States, I felt lonely. I had a few cousins here but there were thousands and thousands of miles away from where I live. My poem is about how we should always embrace our childhood friends and memories because experiencing such a golden age like that is once in a lifetime opportunity. Everyone should make the most out of it, and later in life, when feeling nostalgic, this will always be a good memory to come back to. The main audience in my poem is the generic population. It is directed towards any and every one. My structure has sentence breaks and also includes punctuation such as semi colon, comma, and the period. I used the semi-colon to list out things, I used commas to separate my thoughts and I used the period to end my thought as a complete sentences, intentional fragment and sometimes a run-on sentence. The abca rhyme scheme helps continue the overall pattern and of the poem and makes it a smooth reading. At the ending, I stopped the stanzas and used the phrases “Precious Lives Precious Love Precious Smiles” to reiterate my message as in like food for thought. The lives, love, and smiles of childhood are always precious. So at any point of the reader’s life, he or she can always come back to a treasure only she owns—the memories.
