Catch Tape
Here we go.
World Championships,
Time to get my six.
5, 6,
5, 6, 7,
Dut, dut…
OUT.
No rainbow,
Stayed on left side,
Free hands perfect.
UP.
Reached the peak,
Tip of my sabre
Matches everyone else’s.
CATCH.
Hit my hand with full force,
Right on the catch tape,
For the first time ever!
Teeth showing,
Crowd cheering,
Fingers stinging—
Nailed it!

This poem is about guard, which is my passion. Last winterguard season, I imagined how it would feel to get a solo six, which is a big honor. With this poem, I wanted to express the emotions I feel while I am performing my show. I struggled catching my sabre exactly how I am supposed to for a long time, so when I finally accomplished it, I knew that feeling would never be forgotten. I wanted to expres that in this poem-- the struggle at first, and then the happiness of my goal being acheived.
