I was the new kid in 7th grade.
Not knowing a single person.
I was surrounded by people
I've never seen before.
A new start.

Walking through the halls,
I hear the whispering of my name,
Jonas, Jonas this, Jonas that.
I felt worried about what they were saying about me.
I stuck out like a sore thumb.

Lunch was the worst on this day.
The fear of finding people to sit with,
The fear of taking somebody's seat.
I sat down at a random table,
Sitting quietly while eating my lunch.

Each and every hour I see people staring at me
like I was famous or something.
I stared at the clock all day,
hoping for time to fly by.

The final bell rang to end the day.
I knew tomorrow wouldn't be any different.
Hoping for people to come up
and talk to me.
Trapped in my own thoughts
about what else could make school worse.

I get off the bus full of loud kids yelling.
I walk up to my apartment,
preparing myself for the questions my mom was going to ask.
I walk in, she says “How was your first day of school?”
I respond with,
I finally made it through a day of being the new kid.
