Oh, that time of year when the temperature drops
and the trees start to change.
Where walking down the street suddenly becomes eerie
as you check over your shoulder to assure yourself that it was just the wind.

Oh, the times when you attempt to sleep,
but thunder rumbles and lightning strikes.
When the wind howls and things go bump in the night.
How the moon casts creepy shadows in every corner of your room,
making a tree look like the boogeyman
coming to bid you goodnight.

Oh, the scary movies that keep us up all night,
analyzing every creak and crash.
When you shut your eyes tight and hide under the covers
because no monsters can get you there.

Oh, haunted houses,
how we shriek at every wolfman
and living dead girl.
Where we scream and laugh and hold hands tight
because nobody wants to be stuck in front.

Oh, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,
how we used to check you out of the library at least once every spooky season.
When we would absorb the words but avoid the pictures,
because we all know those were the scariest part.

Oh, Stephen King and R.L. Stine,
how you stopped at nothing to give us scares and nightmares.
When you made us question if a clown would really eat children
or a mask could even have a mind of its own.

Oh, Freddy, Jason, and Michael,
how we used to tremor at the thought of you.
We would cover our eyes at the sight of your freakish figure lurking on the TV screen,
wondering how nobody could ever outrun you.

Oh, October,
Where we would wait all month for our absolute favorite night,
Hallows Eve,
because facing made up monsters
and dreamt up demons
is easier than facing the monsters in our everyday lives.
