The night is silent
Nothing can be heard but the elk grazing near the moonlit lake
It chomps away thinking nothing of the world around it

Wait is stops and stares at the darkness that is the forest
It sits watching, listening, analyzing the sounds that are pouring into its ears
But, nothing it doesn’t know what were the noises

It goes back to its simple grazing only to be startled by the noises it hears
What could it be?
The darkness, now the elk has an almost hypnotic attraction to the darkness
It moves as if it was magnetized by the forest
It takes a step then takes another closer and closer only to stop where light and dark split
It sits smelling for any danger but it finds none and is consumed as it walks into it

It darts out a lightning speed making swift movements left and right trying to evade the pack
It circles around a rough white rock only to be caught
Its shrieks as its tissue and flesh are ripped from the bone then bone being snapped in half by pressure never before felt
Its eyes make wild movements as it is slowly killed and drug back into the darkness

It only wondered why, why the innocent elk killed not by the pack
But by its curiosity, curiosity that killed the cat

The author's comments:

Gregory uses the repetition of the word darkness to put emphasis on its meaning. There is also extensive use of imagery to create an image of innocence in the elk and the world of evil that it is surrounded by. Even down to the graphic point in which the elk is killed you can still picture it even if you don’t want to, the imagery is there to paint a vivid picture. There is also repeated to put emphasis on key words that help the reader get the message.
