The Summer I Was Twelve
The waves roared and roared and roared
Almost as if as they were trying to see which wave could be the loudest.
Finally, the tide was high enough to take us to sea.
And as we packed up our bags, and left the windy beach on the last day of summer,
I took in a breath of salty sea air, trying to carry a souvenir of this moment.
So that I could always remember the summer I was twelve.
Ice cream at Bob's, burgers at Jerry's, and cupcakes at Joe's.
That was the way of life.
Riding our bikes down to the park on a sunny day.
Gulping down glasses of lemonade in the shade,
Under the giant birch tree downtown.
We drive past the beach one last time.
For the last time until next year, I watch the familiar trees pass, and the old seagulls fly south.
And as autumn slowly passes, I wait.
I wait for the summer I turn thirteen to come.
