Lollipop
Lollipop
Fluorescent colors bursting out,
Blue and green and purple and yellow,
swirl about and mix together
in a dazzling display that enchants my hungry eyes.
Arranged in a bowl set out on the table,
all the little children surround to take as many as possible.
After they leave, I pick one up and tear off the clear plastic covering,
revealing a little piece of paradise.
The confetti of colors reach my mouth
and the sweet crystals stick to my tongue
making my taste buds dance with delight.
As a rush of sweetness and sugar fills me inside,
memories of childhood come back to me
and remind me of the days when I ran around carefree,
always looking for the hidden candy jar.
Sometimes simply taking a quick break involving a tad of sugar
can turn your day downside up.
A little tinge of sadness floats upon me like thick fog upon a summer field when I realize
the moments of bliss and comfort are suddenly gone
and the only thing left is a white plastic sticky stick sitting plainly on my hand.
But suddenly I remind myself of the candy bowl on the table
and realize that in only a few hours, I know I will be back for another.
