From A Daughter
A father is supposed to be the one who kills the spiders, the one who runs to your room in the middle of the night when sweat is dripping down your face and your heart is racing and your mind is racing. A father is supposed to be the one who scares away those nightmares, not the one who causes them. A father is supposed to be the one who picks you up and brushes you off when you are two years old and learning to walk, the one threatening to beat the guy who hurt you when you are sixteen and heartbroken, not the one threatening to beat your mother as you watch him do just that, knowing this night will be worse than the one before.
