Reaction Formation
Decipher the language that I speak
It’s not so hard once you realize
Nothing I say is what I mean
It’s all in my head, it’s in yours too
My body shakes with a cackle
I’m idealistic and shallow
I wouldn’t be very good for you
Only transparent for myself
Could you pretend
I’m someone else

Reaction formation is a defense mechanism where a person behaves opposite to how they feel. I see reaction formation in a lot of people, but I find myself using it the most. In my opinion, reaction formation comes up the most when people love eachother especially with teenagers. It's easier to pretend indifference than to show real feelings. I wanted this poem to show what we put ourselves through when we refuse transparency.
