"You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore"

Angels and Demons play a game of chess with our lives
Helping and Harming one another on their twisted board
Mothers and Fathers play a game of roulette with their children
Hurting and Healing them with every decision made
Mind and Body play a game of tug-a-war with their life
Killing and Reviving it with every thought, every breath

Men wave and Women smile every day
Yet
Flesh tears and Blood spills every night

Small talk and Big talk sound in sunlight
Still
Screams and Cries echo in moonlight

In the war against society, lives are rarely lost
But
In the war against ourselves, lives are rarely saved.

The author's comments:
'The War Against Ourselves' is a metaphorical poem written about society today. Everyone seems to be battling themselves, whether that is an eating disorder, self-harm, mental illnesses, self-image issues, or any combination of the above. I wanted to draw attention to the fact that people battling themselves can't always do it alone, and sometimes need help. And if you happen to be one of these people, reach out for help. People are there for you, I promise.
