First Love

Button noses, slicked hair,
deep-set eyes and thin lips
this is a long list of lovers
i dare not share.

so many who have
made the travel
to explore
the endless possibilities

only to get burned
over and over and over again.

no apologies can be made
for this broken heart
with its jagged edges
facing the door

But the heart will
only keep expanding
and building
with every fall

so maybe one day
armed with the injuries
sustained in this war

will someone
come back
and let me feel
everything
i’ve never felt before.
