Common Bond
As I sit in the train car
And think about where the rest are going,
It is enough for me that we go the same way today.
We have this.
Though they are on the other side of the theater,
We have seen the same scenes,
Or heard the same chorus,
Possibly we have turned the same pages,
And it is enough that now this is a piece of us both.
We share this.
And passing by that same intersection,
At five o'clock that day in June,
Is an experience I can only share with a single other, of billions.
Because, if only for an instant,
We each became, however small, part of the other's life.
And though no words were spoken,
And the moment was over as it began,
We were there, and
We are united by this.
In the end we are all faces on the same train,
Going the same way,
When we look out the window to the same sun
As it rises and falls.
