Firefly
The first flash
like a mysterious spell
cast on the world
opening a new door.
It begins with one
but then
spontaneous lanterns
flickering ever so quickly.
Lasting embers
left behind from the winter flames
magically appearing in the air
when the last snowflake falls.
Stare into a forest
and watch the story unfold
suspenseful and beautiful
gifts from the sun.
Swimming
in an inky pool
they create hope
a child’s dream come alive.
How could the weight of the world
rest on the shoulders of these tiny creatures
a power like no other-light.
Challenging fear
they fight secretly
heroes of the night
yet unknown in the day.
Trying to capture one
is like finding love
it will come with patience
but not force.
When the sun returns
they hide
leaving behind happiness
and the ghost of a firefly.
