I hope I never forget
What it felt like to be up all night
When I wasn't still enough for sleep
The nausea of insomnia
The beauty of a silent world
The way I smiled in Boston
The first time I heard city noise
Excited that this animal of people
This creature with one thousand hearts
Also could not slow itself to sleep
I am grateful for the hours
Spent staring at the stars taped to my ceiling
Absolutely still
The hot and humid silence of my mind
Keeping me awake
My ticking dead, my watch still wound
My heart the angry worker
Who was not paid for overtime
The bottle of my new prescription
Says it may cause restlessness
But I've learned it merely helps to bring it back
The tickticktick of shaking legs
One thousand manufactured heartbeats
When I am asked about my sleep
I do not have to lie
The noise I love will still be there at dawn
